A Media Planner's Approach to B2B Advertising: Part Two

Posted by Sean Norton on Mon, May 12, 2014 @ 16:05 PM

In Part One of this series, we discussed what it means for a media planner to become fully immersed in his or her B2B clients’ business. As an extension of our clients’ marketing department, it is critical that we understand the intricacies of their trade, and take those into consideration while planning. It is our job to confidently make sound media recommendations that we stand behind, so this is a critical step in the process. After all, we’re responsible for their advertising budgets, so the more we know, the better.

Native Advertising: Friend or Foe?

Posted by Scott Christopher on Tue, May 6, 2014 @ 12:05 PM

If you have been around the advertising world lately, you probably have heard the term "native advertising" quite a bit. Conversations around the legitimacy and effectiveness of this new mode of advertising have taken our industry by storm in the last few years. What is native advertising, is it a good media idea for brands and a viable ad offering for publishers? This blog will attempt to answer those questions as I explore the risks and potential rewards of marketing this way.

April Good Media Idea: MINI Cooper's digital billboard campaign

Posted by Scott Christopher on Tue, Apr 29, 2014 @ 11:04 AM

This month's Good Media Idea features MINI Cooper and an excellent use of digital billboards in a campaign celebrating existing customers. Last summer, MINI UK bought a series of digital billboards in a highly trafficked area in London and featured images from actual MINI drivers' social accounts displaying their unusally strong relationships with their cars as a part of their 'Not Normal' campaign. But one week, they made these boards even more interactive. Using a team of "spotters" on the road, they identified MINI drivers to activate real-time "salutes" to the drivers by switching out customized creative to feature these actual drivers as they drove by! Good Media Idea: Webinars that generate qualified leads

Posted by Scott Christopher on Mon, Mar 31, 2014 @ 13:03 PM

For this month's good media idea we will highlight webinars, specifically in the B2B marketing space. If you are not familiar with the term, a webinar is an online seminar conducted usually by a publisher and sponsor in which participants pre-register, then log-in to view at a specified time the audio/visual presentation. It is usually timed at an hour, with 45 minutes of a presentation, and 15 minutes for question and answer at the end. Webinars topics vary widely, but usually focus on either a relevant topic to the reader, or discuss an industry problem. Some may even qualify for continuing education credit in certain fields. Above all, webinars should not be a sales pitch of a product - but more on that later. After the webinar is conducted, the publisher or platform usually provides all of the contact information of registrants to the sponsor. Then the sponsor has a fresh set of pre-qualified leads (people that invested an hour of their time to learn more on the topic and company) to begin to nurture.

A Media Planner's Approach to B2B Advertising: Part One

Posted by Sean Norton on Thu, Feb 20, 2014 @ 14:02 PM

Not unlike consumer advertising, media planning and buying in the B2B space is largely about efficiently reaching a client’s target audience, within a finite budget, at precisely the right time. All the while, we must stay true to a communication strategy, allow for creative flexibility, produce tangible results and stay a step ahead of the competition. Sounds like a lot of work, but that’s not all. While B2B audiences (and budgets) are relatively smaller than those in the consumer world, we still face many nuances that make planning and buying in this space quite challenging. Some of these include:

Good Media Idea: In-App advertising from Victoria's Secret

Posted by Scott Christopher on Fri, Feb 14, 2014 @ 16:02 PM

Just in time for Valentine's Day, this month's good media idea highlights Victoria's Secret and their in-app mobile advertising campaigns. They are a great example of a retailer that is activating the "raving fan" base of app users to encourage repeat traffic to go buy more - and through strong creative and new innovative technology they've introduced within their app. The latest "Spring Break" campaign features a scavenger hunt of sorts where consumers must find an image of a model in front of the letter "P" and scan it using image recognition technology in the app, to get offers and deals unique to the app. They also have technology that integrates music playlists within the app as well as other games and unique features. All of the campaigns tie in traditional media as well as eBlasts and SMS, a true multi-channel approach which we always believe is a good idea. It seems to have paid off as well as with strong click-through rates for in-app ads as well as measurable consumer engagement and strong sales.

Is your agency of record a good steward with media payables?

Posted by Scott Jones on Wed, Jan 29, 2014 @ 11:01 AM

Good question, right? Why do you need to have a media agency that is meticulous with media payables, whether they pay media directly or batch media invoices for your accounting department to process?  Besides the obvious credit rating benefit, it also keeps the agency and your company in good standing with media to insure no snags when asking media vendors for credit on the next buy.

Welcome to the Future: Where you can Buy stuff from your Smart TV via your Remote

Posted by Scott Christopher on Thu, Jan 9, 2014 @ 17:01 PM

This month's good media idea comes to us from H&M and their Super Bowl TV spot they have planned featuring David Beckham's Bodywear line. The 30-second spot, when appearing on Samsung smart TVs, will feature a pop-up menu offering more product information, the option to send that info to another device, and even the ability to purchase product using your remote. It will remain interactive, even if viewed later through a DVR. This is all via a platform, Delivery Agent, that has been doing this for years.
