Upfronts 2015: ABC & CBS recap

Posted by Scott Christopher on Thu, May 14, 2015 @ 14:05 PM

This time every year each of the major networks do their "Upfront" presentations to advertisers and agencies, showcasing the new and returning programming for the next season. The nets do this in hopes to secure upfront deals with advertisers before the season starts - hence the name. That's happening this week in New York City - and although we were not able to attend in person, we were able to tune in to the live streams of the presentations. We'd like to share our take on the Upfronts here. I'll start with ABC and CBS, and Neil is going to share his thoughts on the other three in the coming days.

Posted by Scott Christopher on Wed, May 14, 2014 @ 11:05 AM

This is the time of the year that all of the major networks present their "Upfronts" - their dog and pony show of new shows and gimmicks for advertisers and agency media buyers in New York to attract commitments of major year-long deals. They started on Monday of this week with Fox and NBC, today will be CBS. But yesterday was ABC's Upfront and I actually tuned in to the live stream. Here is a brief recap of some of the promising new shows and a few of the trends that I noticed.

So below are a few tips on how to handle these necessary evils, and help you enjoy your conference calls as much as the people in this stock photo.

Can FOX revive American Idol?

Posted by Scott Christopher on Thu, Jan 16, 2014 @ 13:01 PM

Well, it's January, and that means a few things. NFL play-offs. Crowded suburban gyms, and mid-season TV premieres. It's also the beginning of our busy media buying season as many of our clients are on annual fiscal calendars. This week all of us TV media buyers have been in the thick of ratings projections - the process whereby we evaluate the performance of a particular show by evaluating the Nielsen data and then project or predict how it will perform ratings-wise in the coming year/during our clients' flights in that particular market. We do this for all of the available programs we can purchase. It gets particularly tricky when we are having to predict how brand new shows will perform. But it's part of the art and science of the job that keeps us doing the work instead of machines - and it also means we watch a lot of TV which we don't mind.

This time of year our all of our hair is on fire as we are feverishly putting together media plans for our clients. We're checking rates with publications, requesting Media Kits for new
opportunities, scanning websites and exploring new media ideas based on our client's annual marketing objectives. (That's also why we've been a bit silent on the blog this month). But if you are searching for a new media agency, or perhaps unaware of what to do when it comes to forming a quality annual media plan, here's a few of the things we think through at McCulloch+Company when designing media plans for our clients.
