"We'll be right Back" - Unsold Inventory or Technical Glitch?

We've all seen it. That commercial break screen on ESPN, CNN or other apps when streaming TV via your Over-the-Top (OTT) device of choice (Roku, Apple TV, etc.). It appears during a break that's supposed to show you 30 second commercials. Maybe it does show one or two - but for the majority of the commercial pod it's just that screen with the graphic and annoying music.

For example this tourism campaign in Australia that allows airport visitors to pet cheetahs and chase rat kangaroos via augmented reality. But this month I'd like to focus on a media planning fundamental: media mix. It's the whole "don't put all your eggs in one basket" concept, and it's still true in a digital world; maybe even more so.

There is no doubt that podcast listening is enjoying a bit of a resurgence. It is estimated that over 98 million will tune in this year, about 21% of all Americans each month. Not only is it a large quantity of people, but it is an attractive audience that a lot of brands want to reach - highly educated with higher household income and ethnically diverse. And yes podcast listening does over-index among millennials (A18-34).

Doing Mobile Advertising Right

The condundrum of mobile advertising plagues us media folks every day. We all read the studies about how much mobile and tablet usage is up and only growing. But we also know all the realities of the limitation of advertising within this medium. As consumers we experience these everyday: ad intrusion, poor user experience, accidentally clicking on a banner or interstitial on the already small screen that takes us away from our article or app. And then on the advertising side there are similar pit-falls: small screen space to communicate your brand message, low click-through rates, limited functionality, invading your potential customer's very personal mobile device space, etc. And all of this on a virtual mini-computer that fits in your pocket - seems it would be easier to figure out how to advertise well in this space!
